‘Ainu. Pathways to Memory’ is a discovery documentary of the Ainu people in Japan. While they have historically been represented as an exotic tribe and isolated from the world, the reality of the Ainu community entailed processes of cultural assimilation, discrimination, dispossession of land, unfair laws banning their old lifestyles and adaptation to modern life.
On a trip through the recovery of their identity, we will find a people erased from the history of their homeland, whose origins and language are still a mystery. The tour along the paths to memory reveals a renewed interest for cultural preservation. The repeated sentence «I am Ainu» shows a willingness to overcome the harsh conditions of the past and recover their pride. The awakening of the Ainu people in the global world poses an unavoidable question, what does being Ainu mean today?
